Rani ki vav -a poetry on stone

Rani ki vav,  the stepwell, a poetry in stone done by artisans of solanki era as you can see terraces or pavilions at each level supported by pillars, apparently more than 220 of them and over 500 sculptures decorate it. which was constructed by Queen Udayamati (AD 1022-63) in the loving memory of her husband King Bhimdev I of Solanki dynasty, is one of the finest step wells in India . It is 29 metres deep, 65 metres long and 20 metres wide.Built in multiple levels, each level had a partial roof or a pavilion which blocked direct sun light as well as served as a resting area for travelers.

The stepwell have prominent sculptures primarily on the side walls are those of Dashavataras or the ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu. followed by the Solah Shringar figurines or the lady figures showing the 16 elements of body decorations. There are some sculptures of Naga kanyas or snake women. The platforms linking the two walls at each level are pillared corridors that allow you to stand in the middle and admire the step well symmetrically. A lot of geometric patterns can also be seen on some panels between the sculpted ones. Carving on a pillar of the Vav is very beautiful and reminds that how beautiful India was in the past. The corridor walls, pillared pavilions and inner side of well are embellished with fine sculptures.
