Biyyam lake

Ponnani is a small picturesque town located in Malappuram district of Kerala. Encircled by the Arabian Sea on the West, this town is a major fishing center and chief coastal belt in Malabar. The town has contributed massively to the trade and economy of Malabar as it being one of the oldest ports in South India. Remarks about Ponnani Juma Masjid can be found in the colonial historian William Logan’s Malabar Manual. This town was once the second capital of Malabar and served as an abode of power for Samoothiri Kings. It enjoys a noteworthy position in the history of Indian Freedom as many freedom fighters emerged from this small town. Major attractions of this southern port include the Ponnani Juma Masjid, Ponnani Lighthouse, fishing harbor and the Saraswati Hindu Temple. Biyyam Kayal aka Lake Biyyam is another major tourist attraction in Ponnani. Ponnani is popularly known as ‘Makkah of South India’ for it has been a prominent Islamic education center for many centuries. This tidal port is located on the banks of the second longest river of Kerala, Bharathapuzha. The town is thickly populated by Hindus and Muslims, offering an example for cultural and religious co-existence. During the monsoon rains, the paddy fields in this village get filled with water for almost 4 to 6 months. This is a spectacular scene with lots of birds and other small creatures. This kind of waterlogged paddy fields is called Kole land.
